Her own work often reflects her surroundings and photography plays a great part in this. It is the process of making that inspires her textile work, which has been continuous from the age of five, having been taught to knit and sew by her father.

Sara Impey

Sara Impey (left) makes quilts featuring stitched lettering, using the sewing machine needle as a writing tool. With a background in journalism, she is interested in the stitched word and writes her own texts, enabling her both to play with language and use the textile surface to comment on contemporary issues, often with a dash of humour.

Sara Impey

Her quilts have been exhibited nationally and internationally and she has won many awards. She has work in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and The Quilters’ Guild Collection. Her book ‘Text in Textile Art’ was published by Batsford in 2013.

Sara made her first quilt while still at school in 1971!
