A whole planet collaboration between stitchers and scientists.

People from around the world sent in panels for the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) Bicentennial Quilt, depicting planets, telescopes, galaxies, stars, meteorites and comets.

The project, to mark the 200th anniversary of the RAS, overlapped the pandemic and much of the quilt was created during lockdown.

The completed quilt is now part of the RAS library and archive collection, but is on loan to the Norfolk Makers Festival.

You will find it displayed in the lobby to The Gallery.

Quilt of space themed images

The RAS, founded in 1820, exists to advance, and record the history of our understanding of the Earth and other planets, stars and galaxies, and the nature of the universe, addressing deep questions about the origin and fate of the cosmos, and people’s place in it.
