Traditional English smocking was used both in farmer's 'smocks' and in fine society gowns in the pre-industrial world.
It provided a fabric stretch before elastic was available, and a delicate stitched embellishment for those who didn't need to get their hands dirty.
Some Festival visitors may be old enough to remember a bit of a smocking revival in the 1970s. Hang around long enough, and it will be back!
It never went away for Heather Flint, aka Smocking Lady.
Heather is an experienced practitioner of English smocking, and has been designing and making smocked textile items for over 30 years.
Heather is a Festival regular. Join her to have a go at some basic skills and take inspiration from finished items on show.
No experience necessary and all materials and guidance provided.
Heather will also be giving a talk on English smocking at lunchtime on Thursday 18 April.
While all safety measures will be taken and advice given, you participate in free activities and workshops at your own risk.
