Bekah & Claire

Eco-Artists

Eco-Artists Bekah Boone and Claire Gebbett run the community arts initiative, The Nest Project. They strongly believe in making art accessible to all, and focus on our connection with the earth and landscape we live in. They see art as a tool for nurturing communities and creating safe spaces.

What is it about your making skill that makes you enjoy it so much?

We love working with natural materials whilst being outside! It makes us feel so connected
to nature and enhances the creative process by working in an outdoor setting. Also it is such a
joy to enable others to do the same.

What does it mean to you personally and the way you live your life?

We both love working with others and seeing their confidence and abilities flourish. Previously, we both worked in high pressure environments so we really relish making art naturally and collaborating creatively with all kinds of people.

What has been your greatest making achievement?

In July 2019 we worked with St John’s CP School and helped 250 pupils make two large tapestries about the Norfolk Broads and Hoveton. Only recycled and second hand materials were used. It was so wonderful seeing each pupil in the school take part in sewing and creating. The result was really impressive and now the two tapestries adorn the reception area of the school.

What is your favourite piece of equipment and why?

We both love our secateurs when we are making outside – so useful for cutting and trimming to create a beautiful natural landscape.

What is your favourite making website or blog and why?

We both love Instagram and the work of Artpocket and Withy Arts. They produce interesting visual work and their arm is to educate and work with others.

Why do you like being part of the Festival (and formerly of Makers’ Month).

The Festival has a great buzz about it and it’s always so rewarding to meet new people and then work together to make art!

What is your advice to a complete beginner who wants to have a go at your craft?

Be open minded about your ability and you might be surprised!
