The remarkable history of the sewing machine

This event has already taken place.

The Remarkable History of the Sewing Machine.

And the Interesting Characters who Enabled its Development.

The sewing machine was invented in the middle of the nineteenth century. It brought dramatic changes to people’s lives and aided the progress of mass production of clothing.

Joy Evitt, a member of the Costume and Textile Association, is an expert on the history of textiles and has a love of sewing machines and their history.

Joy will be bringing along some sewing machines from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to illustrate how these machines developed over the first one hundred years.

The talk is free. There is no need to book but we will have to turn you away if The Forum’s Auditorium is full.

Two hangings are on display at the Festival, courtesy of the Costume and Textile Association.
